Our Story,Our Vision

Matt Smith — known simply as M. — is a mixed-media artist based on the Gold Coast, working across acrylic, oil pastel and pastel on canvas and paper. His practice bridges instinct and intention, layering colour, texture and mark to create works that feel both raw and considered.

In 2001, M. was a finalist in the Sydney Rocks Art Prize with two selected pieces — an early recognition of a voice that was already distinct. He has since exhibited in multiple galleries, including a solo exhibition at Lotus Gallery in 2002 and a group exhibition at World Fine Art Gallery in 2003. His work now resides in private collections across Europe, North America and Australia, and has been featured in television series and in the men’s style sections of magazines alongside his clothing range — reflecting a broader creative identity that moves fluidly between fine art and design.

Yet beyond exhibitions and accolades, Art of M. is deeply personal.

“My work is really the manifestation of my subconscious mind.”

Each piece begins as an internal dialogue — fragments of memory, emotion, language and symbolism surfacing and colliding on the canvas. There are recurring themes of technology and mythology, often intertwined as if ancient archetypes are negotiating with the modern world. References to transcendence and redemption thread quietly through the work, revealing an ongoing fascination with transformation — the idea that nothing is fixed, and that every story holds the possibility of a second chapter.

Second chances are not just thematic — they are foundational. They reflect the artist’s own lived experiences and the belief that growth often emerges from rupture. This sense of renewal gives the work its underlying tension: raw yet resolved, fractured yet whole.

Words hold particular power in M.’s practice.

“I’m fascinated by words — what they mean, our connection to them, and the attachments we place upon them.”

Language appears not only as text, but as gesture — scratched into surfaces, implied through rhythm, embedded within layers. Words become symbols; symbols become feeling. The viewer is invited to question not only what is written, but what is remembered, projected, or unconsciously understood.

Art of M. exists at the intersection of colour, symbol, memory and myth. It is where subconscious dialogue meets visual exploration — a space that asks not just what we see, but why we see it. Through layered marks, expressive strokes and intuitive composition, each work carries an energy that evolves over time. They are pieces designed not merely to be viewed, but to be lived with.

At its core, Art of M. is about presence. Art that occupies space with confidence. Art that challenges perception. Art that resonates beyond the moment of first glance.

Whether experienced as an original work or fine art print, every piece is created to hold its own within the environments we return to daily — to shift subtly with changing light, mood and perspective. The works are shaped by stories — both personal and universal — and offered as an open conversation with those who choose to bring them into their world.

Art of M. is not simply a body of work.
It is an ongoing narrative — one of reflection, transformation and the enduring search for meaning.
